When I first started shooting surfing photos, I was always very intimidated by the big surf mags. I always thought, “there is no way Surfer will ever consider my surfing photos.” What I did not realize was my photos were worthy of the magazine, I just had to figure out how to get my foot in the door. To be honest, getting surfing photos published in Surfing Magazine is no easy task. The photo archives at the mags have thousands of top notch images and due to retainers, many of them are already paid for. So the question you have to ask yourself is, “How do get the photo editors at Surfer to even look at my images?” Below are some basic guidelines that will help increase your chances of getting your photos published in Surfing, Surfer or Transworld Surf magazine.

Only technically perfect images: Yes there are filter/programs that can fix a photo that is out of focus, over exposed or poorly framed, but this is your first photo submission and you need to put your best foot forward. Sending photos that are not technically perfect just makes you look unprofessional and the photo editors are less likely to look at your next photo submission.
No more than a dozen: The number one mistake new photographers make is send too many photos. Rather than sending their best shots, they send everything that did not end up in the garbage. With the advent of digital photography this problem has only become worse. The photo editors have enough to look at, they do not need to, nor do they want to, look thru thousands of your surfing photos. You are much better off picking out a dozen of your best surf shots, empty waves and line ups. If you do not have a dozen A++ surf photos, then send less. This will guarantee they will look at your photos. If the photo editors like your images they will ask to see more. On the other hand, if you send to many surfing photos, there is less than a 1% chance that they will look at all your photos, and what if the photos they choose not to look at are your best photos?
There are a lot of applications out there to help organize your photos, but there is one that you may not have heard of. It is a technology that Microsoft is working on. The application will enable you to seamlessly view digital photos. The technology even promises to help you meta tag all of your photos. /p>
