I know for sure this can be done with any cell phone that has a SIM card, and I believe it can be done even if your phone does not have a SIM card.

You have to have one of 2 things, an original receipt for the phone, or you must have an account with the cell phones original carrier. Do not bother calling your local cell phone store as they will have no idea what you are talking about. You need to call customer support. When you call be sure to have the cell phone with you as they will need a number from the phone. Tell them you would like to unlock your cell phone for free. If the agent says this is not possible, ask them to check with another agent or their supervisor. Once you get the proper person on the phone, they will ask you a couple of things, give you a confirmation number and then in a couple of days they will email you a code to unlock your cell phone for free. It is that simple.

I have actually done this. I had a cell phone given to me by a friend. He had T-Mobile and I have AT&T. When I called my local AT&T store they acted like I was crazy. On the other hand, if you do not have the patience to wait a couple days, there are plenty of companies out there are willing to charge you to unlock your cell phone.
